Jammu, Dec 24 (KNO): The Department of Pediatric Surgery at Government Medical College, Jammu, has achieved yet another milestone by performing advanced laparoscopic procedures that place it among the few leading tertiary care centres in India. Recently, a complex case involving a 2 year old boy diagnosed with a choledochal cyst, a congenital anomaly of bile duct was successfully managed with a state of the art laparoscopic approach, a statement issued to the news agency—Kashmir News Observer (KNO) reads. The boy, who had recurrent abdominal pain, was diagnosed with choledochal cyst with a complex variation. The child underwent total laparoscopic choledochal cyst excision with hepatico-duodenostomy, a highly advanced surgical procedure, it reads. The surgery was skilfully conducted by a team of surgeons led by Dr. Saalim Nazki, Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, assisted by Dr. Divyanshu (Postgraduate) and Mr. Rakesh Kumar (Sr OT Technician). The anaesthesia team, including consultants Dr. Ashufta Qazi and Dr. Isha Gupta, provided vital perioperative support. Postoperatively, the child was closely monitored in the Pediatric ICU and was discharged on postoperative day six in excellent condition. Reflecting on the achievement, Dr. Saalim Nazki, Head of the Department of Pediatric Surgery, highlighted that such advanced procedures are performed only in a handful of tertiary centers across India. The said procedure is performed laparoscopically for the first time in Jammy city. He also emphasized the department's consistent efforts to bring cutting-edge surgical care to patients. Apart from this landmark case, the department has successfully carried out many other advanced laparoscopic procedures in the children, including Pyeloplasty, Tumor excisions, Fundoplications, Nephrectomies, Laparoscopic pull-through procedures, Cystoscopic and Thoracoscopic procedures to name few. The department also routinely performs essential laparoscopic surgeries such as cholecystectomies, orchidopexy, appendicectomia, and various other procedures with great success. Dr. Saalim Nazki expressed his gratitude to the present government for providing the facilities and opportunities enabling such achievements. He extended heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Ashutosh Gupta, Principal and Dean, Government Medical College Jammu, and Dr. Dara Singh, Medical Superintendent, SMGS Hospital Jammu, for their unwavering administrative support. He also acknowledged the contributions of Dr. Ghanshyam Saini, Head of Pediatrics, and Dr. Anita Vig, Head of Anesthesia, for their exceptional support in the perioperative period to achieve such milestones. Additionally, Dr. Nazki lauded the dedication of his Paediatric Surgery Colleague Dr Sanjay Raina along with registrars, residents, OT and ward staff, whose teamwork and perseverance make these milestones possible. Dr. Nazki reiterated the importance of these advanced procedures like minimal invasive surgeries in modern medical science. By performing such surgeries locally, the department ensures that patients no longer need to seek treatment outside the state for high-standard, cutting-edge modalities. This achievement marks a significant step toward improving healthcare accessibility and quality for the people of Jammu and Kashmir—(KNO)
